Saturday the 4th of April 2009 marked an important milestone for iAS and Lufthansa Technik Malta with the official opening of the new MRO facility at Hal-Farrug. The facility was inaugurated by the Prime Minister, Hon, Lawrence Gonzi, in the presence of a number of dignitaries, guests and workers of Lufthansa Technik Malta. iAS staff were also present for this event and the firm was personally thanked by the CEO of Lufthansa technik Malta , Mr Louis Giordimaina, for their management style and skills which proved to be paramount to enable the project to be complete in the desired timeframes, a notable achievement by any standard. iAS were commissioned by Lufthansa in early 2007 for project management, cost management and architectural and structural design. The project had to be sufficiently complete by November 2008 to enable the first wide body aircraft to be serviced in the facility. The site covers an area of approximately 61,000 square metres and is located in one of the tributary valleys leading to Wied il-Kbir within the precincts of the Malta International Airport. The development of the project posed several technical challenges, sometimes firsts in the local construction industry, which included:
The project management and cost management proved to be the most daunting tasks. As expected, considering the short design lead period, the project was continuously undergoing changes to plans, each having to be assessed in terms of time and cost implications. Processes were setup which enabled decisions to be taken at phenomenally fast rates so that works on site were not effected by delays in key strategic decisions. We, at iAS, believe that the success of the project is due to various reasons but without doubt it is primarily to the ability of the iAS management team to create a strong bond between all team members including other design firms and all the contractors on the site, making everyone feel that the achievement being sought is a realistic achievement and making everyone feel part of the team.” |
