Gasco Ltd, a joint venture company between Liquigas and Multigas have awarded the project management of the first phase of their project to iAS. The project involves the construction of a completely new LPG facility which will eventually replace the existing LPG facilities of Qajjenza in Birzebbugia. The project is envisaged to cost in the region of €25M and is to be fully operational within the next 36 months, with individual phases coming independently online during the project lifecycle. |

iAS have been commissioned by Corinthia Group of Companies to represent Palm City in the handing over process. Palm City, in Janzour, Libya, is a modern residential complex currently being constructed and finished by Corinthia Group of companies on the outskirts of Tripoli. The complex will include over 400 residential units ranging from apartments to terrace houses to villas. All units will be serviced with a number of facilities such as sport facilities, commercial outlets, restaurants, clinics etc which will make the project self sufficient. iAS will be responsible to take over the properties from the main contractor on behalf of Palm City, the operating arm, and ensure that all works are fully functional and to expected standards. On the occasion of the fifth anniversary of iAS, the accomplishments of the firm were celebrated through a day seminar at the Radisson SAS St. Julians. The achievements of the firm were acknowledged, where presentations were provided to the staff and guests by the new chairman and the directors of the firm, in addition to a general discussion encompassing the experiences of the staff and the challenges of the future. Present for this event were Mr. Joseph F.X Zahra of Misco, business advisor to the firm and Dr. Joe Ghio of Fenech and Fenech advocates, legal counsel to iAS. |

At the general meeting of the shareholders of iAS (Innovative Architectural Structures), Franco Azzopardi has been appointed as the new chairman of the organization, with the intention of further strengthening the Board through cross-breeding of diverse professionals, and now replaces the previous Chairman Peter Zammit, the director responsible for Project Management. iAS is an architectural and engineering firm which has diversified its services in the fields of project management and specialized design services, where they have been entrusted with major projects such as the Lufthansa Technik Malta Maintenance Facility and Pender Gardens.
Franco has been involved with iAS since its inception in 2004, in which time he contributed towards the setup of the business model and marketing strategy of iAS. Franco has built a reputation for a modern outlook in business administration following his successful completion of a postgraduate degree in finance at the University of Leicester that enhances his background as a CPA, and after his 17 year involvement as a founding partner in a mid‐tier accounting firm, where he was responsible for Corporate Strategy, Risk Management and Knowledge/People Development. He was also elected member of the Council of the Malta Institute of Accountants in 2007, is a director of a mid-tier accountancy firm 3a Malta Ltd, and also serves as a board member and member of the audit committees of public interest entities such as APS Bank Ltd and RS2 plc. He also served in the past as board member of authorities including the Malta Transport Authority, Valletta Harbour Regeneration Corporation PLC, University Sports Complex Ltd and was the Chairman of the Board of Directors of the National Governing Body of Sport in Malta. Franco currently focuses on strategy, finance and governance towards better performance in professional service firms, where iAS was amongst the first to engage his services. He has become the driving force required to set business standards in the local market and advance iAS towards an international outlook.
Franco’s engagement is in line with the firm’s strong belief in the need of incorporation of different professional competences in order to enhance the firm’s outlook and development. iAS staff has held the second consecutive presentation and tour of the LTM Hangar Facilites, this time for MCAST students. The presentation focused on various managerial aspects that were essential in order for the unique project to succeed. The students, comprising of second and third years attaining the Higher National Diploma at the Institute of Building and Construction, showed interest mostly on the technical ground works carried out at different stages of this project. On the other hand, iAS staff revealed that they believe the system adopted in house with regards to the order of filing, drawing scheduling and keeping daily records, resulted in delivering efficient work in the stipulated time frame and professional efficiency.
iAS were commissioned by Lufthansa in early 2007 for project management, cost management and architectural and structural design. The project had to be sufficiently complete by November 2008 to enable the first wide body aircraft to be serviced in the facility. It was officially inagurated on 4th of April 2009. |

Saturday the 4th of April 2009 marked an important milestone for iAS and Lufthansa Technik Malta with the official opening of the new MRO facility at Hal-Farrug. The facility was inaugurated by the Prime Minister, Hon, Lawrence Gonzi, in the presence of a number of dignitaries, guests and workers of Lufthansa Technik Malta. iAS staff were also present for this event and the firm was personally thanked by the CEO of Lufthansa technik Malta , Mr Louis Giordimaina, for their management style and skills which proved to be paramount to enable the project to be complete in the desired timeframes, a notable achievement by any standard.

As part of ongoing continuous professional development iAS staff are currently participating in the 'young professionals management training programe' organized by the International Federation of Consulting Engineers - FIDIC. The training programme which commenced in February 2009 will involve a number of case studies which are discussed and analysed by the participants who bring to the table different opinions, outlooks and cultures from all over the world. The programme will end in September 2009 where participants are expected to take an active part in the annual FIDIC conference which will beheld in London.

iAS staff provided a presentation and tour of the LTM Hangar Facilities to university staff and lecturers, which incorporated an explanation of the technical and managerial aspects involved with the completion of the development within a very limited time frame. The students, comprising of final year students from the Department of Architecture and Civil Engineering, were given a tour of the workshop buildings, hangars and apron and given a first hand account of the construction solutions adopted for the specialised building elements from the iAS senior staff. |

As part of its growing portfolio of works, iAS has recently been jointly awarded works involving repair works to the deteriorating marine structures at Barriera Wharf, Marsa and Msida Quays. iAS views this project as an important aspect in Malta’s aim to further develop the commercial potential of its coastline and an opportunity for staff to further develop its technical competence in repair work on concrete structures and marine environments
As part of the works, design engineer David Micallef shall be applying investigation from his current MSc thesis research work, being carried out with the University of Surrey, to the proposed repair works. This approach is consistent with the iAS belief of achieving technical excellence in its consultation work and researching the most effective and advanced technical solutions. |
